What the Trump-Xi Meeting Means for U.S.-China Relations

U.S. President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping today in Beijing, marking the first visit by a sitting American president to China since Trump’s previous trip in 2017. The two leaders are framing the two day summit as an effort to stabilize one of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationships. However, beneath the pomp-filled ceremony and warm words were stark warnings about Taiwan disagreements over global security issues and ongoing economic and technological rivalry. To discuss what this meeting could achieve and what it could mean for the future of U.S.-China relations, Marc-André Cossette is joined by former Canadian ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques.
