
Ministers comment on economic update, House committee changes – April 28, 2026
Prime Minister Mark Carney and ministers speak briefly with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting.
The prime minister, as well as ministers Sean Fraser (justice), Eleanor Olszewski (emergency management), Patty Hajdu (jobs and families) and Adam van Koeverden (secretary of state for sport) comment on the government’s spring economic, which will be tabled in the House of Commons later in the day.
Minister David McGuinty (defence) is asked about the plan for the acquisition of new fighter jets and submarines.
Minister Maninder Sidhu (international trade) responds to questions on concerns around forced labour in Canadian supply chains. He also speaks about the United Arab Emirates’ decision to leave OPEC next month.
Minister Steven MacKinnon (transport, government House leader) is asked about the government’s new motion that would allow a change to the composition of House committees to ensure Liberal MPs have a majority.
MacKinnon and Sean Fraser (justice) face questions on whether the government is planning to introduce legislation to restrict the use of social media platforms for youth under 16.
Minister Anita Anand (foreign affairs) speaks about Canada’s support for the Gulf States and its position vis-à-vis the Iranian regime amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Ministers Joël Lightbound (government transformation, public works and procurement), Marjorie Michel (health), in addition to secretaries of state Nathalie Provost (nature), Stephen Fuhr (defence procurement) and Adam van Koeverden (sport) face questions on topics ranging from the renovation of 24 Sussex, the possibility of a smoking ban for youth and the government’s gun buyback program.
