Conservatives Force AG Probe into Immigration Screening

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Michelle Rempel Garner, Conservative Shadow Minister for Immigration, and Brad Redekopp, Associate Shadow Minister for Immigration, issued the following statement on a recent Conservative motion for an Auditor General (AG) review of Canada’s immigration system, and hundreds of millions in Liberal spending on health care for failed asylum claimants:

“Canadians were stunned by the AG’s 2026 report on the International Students Program, which exposed the Liberals’ complete abdication of responsibility for the integrity of our student visa system. In committee, the AG also raised serious concerns about immigration screening processes.

“Yesterday, despite Liberal attempts to block it, Conservatives successfully passed a motion at the House Public Accounts Committee which invites the AG to expand the scope of her audit on student visas, as well as to start a new one to examine the integrity of Canada’s immigration screening processes. These new steps will provide valuable scrutiny on the government’s ability to keep Canadians safe.

“Additionally, an Order Paper Question response tabled yesterday revealed that the Liberals have spent a quarter of a billion dollars on health care for failed refugee claimants over the past decade, including supplemental benefits that Canadians don’t have access to.

“At a time when millions of Canadians don’t have access to a family doctor, this is an outrage. Conservatives once again call on the Liberals to limit healthcare funding for failed refugee claimants to emergency and lifesaving care, and to end the abuse of Canada’s asylum system.”
