NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

BC NDP MLAs Parmar and Lajeunesse say funding will help better support evacuees on the Westshore during emergencies

Langford – MLAs Ravi Parmar and Dana Lajeunesse say that provincial funding being distributed to local governments, regional districts, and First Nations across the province, including on the Westshore, will support emergency support services, making sure people who are displaced and impacted in emergencies can access the support they need.

“Making sure communities are prepared for wildfires and other emergencies is a top priority,” said Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford-Highlands. “With this provincial support, our local teams will be better equipped to help people. This funding strengthens our communities and helps us to continue building for the future.”

On the Westshore, the following communities are receiving funding:

  • Langford – $28,400 for team training, leadership development, and equipment
  • Sooke – $30,000 for IT equipment, training, and volunteer recruitment and retention

“Strong and effective emergency response demands that our first responders have access to the most up to date tools,” said Dana Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca–Malahat. “With new IT equipment and expanded training, Sooke will be better equipped to support evacuees quickly and efficiently. This support helps to ensure our community is prepared for whatever comes our way.”

This funding, from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness’ Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, is investing nearly $2.5 million to support 54 projects in almost 90 communities in British Columbia.

This will support Governments and Nations to strengthen their Emergency Support Services to help people when they need it most, through training and recruiting volunteers, improving equipment, and accessing supplies like overnight kits for evacuees.
