Is This What “Under Control” Looks Like?

Ottawa, ON – On March 25, when asked about the state of the immigration system, the Prime Minister said: “We have the system under control.”

In the past two weeks, since Parliament was last in session, the following has occurred:

  • On April 1, Alberta had to step up and regulate Temporary Foreign Workers because of continued federal failures.
  • On April 1, the Toronto Star published a story about a refugee who was under a deportation order to be sent back to Hungary, having committed assault and robbery, who subsequently breached parole and was charged with first-degree murder and human trafficking.
  • On April 1, a woman convicted of killing her 10-year old Canadian stepson was not sent back to Jamaica.
  • On April 2, an IRGC official who lied to get into Canada and used false names sued to have his mother be allowed to come to Canada as an immigrant.
  • On April 3, the Liberals announced changes to the Citizenship Guide, continuing a shameful tradition of the Trudeau-era devaluing Canadian history and citizenship, and importing American-style politics.
  • On April 4, Quebec Justice Dennis Galiatsatos said that Canada cannot have a two-tier justice system in ruling on the case of a married immigrant who harassed another woman, 22 years his junior, into trying to make her his Sharia-law wife. Disappointingly, Justice Galiatsatos imposed a light sentence and allowed the convicted felon to remain in Canada.
  • As of April 6, the impacts of the Liberal Chain Migration Bill (C-3) continued to unfold, with more and more Americans applying for automatic citizenship.
  • On April 7, a refugee, who was driving without a license, killed two and seriously injured another while trying to escape police, was given an absolute discharge after being found guilty of two indictable offences. Despite being sentenced to three years and three months, he was not removed from Canada. 
  • On April 7, federal Immigration officers were told not to scrutinize the credibility of refugee claims.
  • On April 8, the Globe and Mail attacked the continued federal policy of not reviewing refugee claims with in-person hearings. 
  • On April 8, Quebec Court Justice Antoine Piché condemned a two-tier justice system in Montreal, saying that prosecutors often recommend more lenient sentences for criminals who would otherwise be deported. Canadian citizens continue to face harsher sentences.
  • On April 9, a Bishnoi Gang extortionist wanted for arson had his deportation called off because he disappeared in Canada, and neither the Immigration and Refugee Board nor the Canada Border Services Agency know where he is.
  • On April 9, the Investigative Journalism Bureau documented continued human smuggling tactics in Quebec.
  • On April 10, a Hamilton, Ontario judge wrote in a decision that said of an illegal study permit overstayer, who extorted and subsequently released online sexually explicit videos, that: “In my opinion, in 2023 [the time of the crime], not only should the accused have not been at large on bail, but he should not have been in this country at all. While the legal system was catering to the needs of the accused, now a convicted criminal with no legal immigration status, what was happening with the complainant?”
  • On April 10, four illegal border crossers were nabbed crossing into Maine.
  • On April 11, a man convicted of breaching a no-contact order with his former partner convinced a New Brunswick judge to grant him a conditional discharge to avoid deportation.
  • And just today, two men accused of a 2025 murder in the Toronto tow truck wars were revealed as refugee claimants.

Is this what a system under control looks like, Mr. Prime Minister?

Conservatives on the Immigration committee were ready to continue their work and deliver on their mandate to investigate these issues and demand answers on behalf of Canadians. Unfortunately, the Liberals have used their control of committees to cancel today’s meeting, curtailing debate and limiting Members of Parliament from asking necessary questions of this government. 

Liberal mismanagement and dereliction of duty broke our immigration system. Now they’re revealing what a majority will look like: no plans to get the system back under control, no investigations into ensuring the system is working and no accountability for their failures.

In other words, the illusion of control.
