Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Greek Independence Day

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Greek Independence Day:

“On this day, within the hallowed walls of the Agia Lavra, a heroic struggle began.

“For centuries after the fall of Byzantium, Greeks lived under foreign rule. Through it all, they held firm to the cherished customs and Orthodox faith that have always seen Hellenes through hardship and calamity.

“Throughout the 1820s, the Greek War of Independence would inspire freedom-loving people across Europe, and create a Hellenic homeland on the continent once again.

“Here in Canada, our own proud community of Greek heritage has embodied our nation’s promise, starting businesses and families in what they saw as a land of opportunity. Their strong family values, hard work and pride have made them the cornerstone of so many communities across our country.

“On behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I want to wish all those celebrating a very happy Greek Independence Day!”
