Ministers speak briefly with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting.

Ministers Mélanie Joly (industry), Sean Fraser (justice) and Steven MacKinnon (transport, government House leader) face questions on the legal challenge of Quebec’s secularism law that is currently being heard by the Supreme Court of Canada.

MacKinnon also comments on the recent collision at New York’s LaGuardia airport involving an Air Canada passenger jet and a fire truck, which resulted in the death of the pilot and first officer.

Fraser speaks as well on the calls from the premiers of Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and Saskatchewan to give provinces more of a say when it comes to the appointment of superior and appeal court judges.

François-Philippe Champagne (finance) is asked about what the government plans to do to address the rising cost of gas at the pumps.

Eleanor Olszewski (emergency management and community resilience) comments on the memorandum of understanding on energy between the federal government and Alberta and whether the April 1 deadline for a new pipeline deal will be reached.

David McGuinty (defence) responds to questions on what role Canada might be able to play in securing and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
