Ministers comment on conflict in Middle East, oil price spike – March 12, 2026

Ministers speak briefly with reporters on Parliament Hill before the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting.

Minister Anita Anand (foreign affairs) is asked about the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

François-Philippe Champagne (finance) and Mélanie Joly (industry) respond to questions on the rise in global oil prices and what the federal government might be able to do to stabilize prices.

Champagne is also asked about Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s trip to the United States.

Champagne speaks as well about the federal government’s move to cap banking fees at $10 for those with insufficient funds.

Additionally, Joly comments on federal support for the tariff-impacted steel industry.

Rebecca Alty (Crown-Indigenous relations) is asked about agreements signed between the Musqueam First Nation and the federal government that recognizes Aboriginal rights in Metro Vancouver.

Rebecca Chartrand (Northern and Arctic affairs) speaks about concerns raised by First Nations leaders around Alberta separatism.

Steven MacKinnon (transport, government House leader) faces questions on former NDP MP Lori Idlout crossing the floor to join the Liberal caucus. He is also asked about the challenges for the Liberal government in passing legislation in the current minority Parliament.
