B.C. NDP responds to call from Pride groups for motion upholding Human Rights Code

March 11, 2026 at 11:08 am  Politics, Provincial

VICTORIA—The B.C. NDP government has introduced a motion in the legislature to affirm support for the B.C. Human Rights Code, in response to a request from 17 Pride organizations.

The Pride organizations wrote to every MLA on Monday calling for them to “Reaffirm, through a collective statement or resolution, the Assembly’s commitment to defending the BC Human Rights Code and the equality protections it guarantees.” This followed the controversial first reading vote on Tara Armstrong’s Human Rights Code Repeal Act, which the B.C. Conservatives voted for.

Jennifer Blatherwick, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, has replied to indicate that the government will be moving forward with the request for a motion.

Her letter is available on Twitter/X and Bluesky. A PDF is available here

The motion is on the order paper under Mike Farnworth’s name here, and is eligible to be called as early as Thursday.
