Federal govt announces investment in defence innovation – March 9, 2026

At a news conference in Ottawa, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announces that the National Research Council will make investments of approximately $900 million under Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy. The planned funding includes investments in drone and aerospace technology. Also taking part in this announcement are Julie Lefebvre (vice-president of emerging technologies at the National Research Council), David McGuinty (minister of national defence), Stephen Fuhr (secretary of state for defence procurement), and Mitch Davies (president of the National Research Council).
