Liberals on govt meeting with OpenAI reps, U.S. tariffs against Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney, ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting.

The prime minister, as well as Ministers Evan Solomon (AI), Sean Fraser (justice) and Gary Anandasangaree (public safety) comment on last night’s meeting between federal government officials and representatives from OpenAI. The meeting came in the wake of revelations that OpenAI banned an account associated with the Tumbler Ridge, B.C. shooter last June but failed to alert Canadian authorities.

Anandasangaree faces questions on reports that credible death threats have been made against a Canadian Sikh leader in Surrey, B.C. This comes ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trade mission to India.

Ministers François-Philippe Champagne (finance), Mélanie Joly (industry), Anita Anand (foreign affairs) respond to questions on U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer’s statements that any upcoming trade deal between Canada and the U.S. will include tariffs.

Anand and Randeep Sarai (secretary of state, international development) announce an additional $8 million in to Cuba, as the country deals with a worsening humanitarian situation.

Minister Steven MacKinnon (government House leader), as well as MPs Ben Carr, Greg Fergus and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith are asked about Immigration Minister Lena Diab, following a CBC report that outlined concerns from community groups regarding her performance as minister.

MP Matt Jeneroux faces questions on his decision to leave to Conservative caucus to join the governing Liberals. He is also asked about Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to invite him on the upcoming trade mission to India, Japan and Australia.

Minister Patty Hajdu (jobs and families), as well as MPs Kevin Lamoureux, Jean-Yves Duclos and Adam van Koeverden respond to questions on issues ranging from applications for OAS, spring election speculation and the possibility of another Quebec referendum on independence.
