Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on the Anniversary of Putin’s Illegal Invasion of Ukraine

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on the anniversary of Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine:

“In the four years since the Russian Federation launched its unlawful and unjustified full-scale war, Ukraine has witnessed destruction and bloodshed not seen in Europe for generations.

“This brutal conflict has affected every Ukrainian family, not sparing civilian sites like Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt hospital or Odesa’s Transfiguration Cathedral, and leaving whole towns virtually uninhabitable.

“But shining through it all has been the resilience of the extraordinary Ukrainian people: parents caring for children during outages and sirens, ordinary soldiers showing selflessness and courage, volunteers helping those who left everything behind, and entrepreneurs running businesses within earshot of the frontline.

“Conservatives are proud to stand with this incredible nation, just as we did in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s time. That’s why we want to defund Putin’s war machine by promoting Canadian oil and gas as an ethical alternative. It’s why we’re steadfast that the Russian Federation cannot be readmitted to the G7. And it’s why we want a Canadian Armed Forces that can stand up to Moscow and its authoritarian allies while supporting and strengthening our own.

“As Ukrainians mark this solemn date, we look forward to the day when they will once again raise their sons and daughters under a peaceful sky in a free and sovereign land.”
