MPs comment on Tumbler Ridge shooting and OpenAI, Trump’s global tariffs – February 23, 2026

MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as they convene for the daily question period in the House of Commons.

Minister Evan Solomon (artificial intelligence and digital innovation) comments on reports that OpenAI banned an account associated with the Tumbler Ridge, B.C. shooter last June, but failed to alert Canadian authorities. Solomon confirms that representatives from OpenAI will in Ottawa on Monday to meet with government officials.

Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer speaks about the budget implementation act and on the way forward for Canada-U.S. trade. He also responds to questions on safety concerns with OpenAI following the Tumbler Ridge shooting.

Minister Maninder Sidhu (international trade), Liberal MPs Judy Sgro, Terry Sheehan, Jaime Battiste and Marcus Powlowski, Conservative MP Ziad Aboultaif, as well as NDP MP Gord Johns face questions on U.S. President Donald Trump’s move to impose to 10 per cent global tariffs in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling against his 2025 emergency tariffs.

Johns is also asked about reports that NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice may leave federal politics to run for Québec Solidaire in the 2026 provincial election
