Ministers comment on President Trump’s Gordie Howe Bridge Threats – February 10, 2026

Prime Minister Mark Carney and ministers speak briefly with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting. The prime minister speaks about the phone call he had this morning with Donald Trump following the U.S. president’s threats to block the opening of the new Gordie Howe Bridge between Windsor and Detroit.

Minister Mélanie Joly (industry), François-Philippe Champagne (finance) and Steven MacKinnon (government House leader) also comment on the U.S. president’s most recent threat against Canada.

Joly comments on reports that Canada has apparently started making payments for 14 additional U.S.-built F-35 fighter jets.

Minister Sean Fraser (justice) and MacKinnon are asked about Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act.

Minister Shafqat Ali (Treasury Board president) faces questions on the government’s move to mandate federal public servants back to the office 4 days a week starting in July 2026.

Minister Evan Solomon (AI) responds to questions on the issues surrounding the regulation of artificial intelligence.
