Ministers comment on auto sector layoffs, EV incentives – February 3, 2026

Ministers speak to reporters as cabinet holds its the weekly meeting on Parliament Hill.

Prime Minister Mark Carney give his condolences to the families of Cameron Casorso, JJ Wright, and Caden Fine, three members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs hockey team who died in a motor vehicle accident on February 2nd.

Ministers Lena Metlege Diab (immigration), Mélanie Joly (industry), François-Philippe Champagne (finance), David McGuinty (national defence), Eleanor Olszewski (emergency management), Steven MacKinnon (transport), and Anita Anand (foreign affairs) face questions on a number of topics, including the increasing number of layoffs in Canada’s auto sector, the potential return of EV purchasing incentives for consumers, and the United States’ recent announcement that Canadian aircraft could face a 50 per cent tariff and FAA decertification if Canada does not move to certify more American-produced aircrafts.
