End Hidden Liberal Food Taxes
Conservatives call on the government to reverse Liberal policies that have given Canada the G7’s highest food inflation
Ottawa, ON – Sandra Cobena, Conservative Member of Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora, and Vincent Ho, Conservative Member of Parliament for Richmond Hill South, released the following statement urging the Prime Minister to take immediate action to address the long-term reality of food inflation crushing Canadians:
“Since Mark Carney became Prime Minister promising affordable groceries, food inflation has doubled to the highest in the G7. It is also double that of the U.S. The Prime Minister cannot blame global factors, when all the other countries have lower food price inflation than Canada. It is a home-grown problem of high Liberal taxes on farmers, fertilizer, and food processors and rampant inflationary deficits.
“The Prime Minister said that he should be judged by the cost at the grocery store. As he himself noted, Canadian food banks saw nearly 2.2 million visits in a single month last year. The 2026 Food Price Report is now estimating that it will cost $17,600 to feed a family of four – up $1,000 from last year. A quarter of youth are skipping meals to pay other bills. Today’s reannounced rebate–which Conservatives will allow to quickly pass–will barely cover a single trip to the grocery store for most families.
“Notably, in 2022 the former Liberal Prime Minister announced a similar policy – a one-time doubling of the same credit. The cost of living crisis has only gotten worse since then.
“Conservatives have real solutions that could be adopted immediately: repeal the food inflation packaging tax, the industrial carbon tax and the fuel standard that will add 17 cents per litre of gas so that the food Canadians eat can get from field to fork affordably.
“In his recent speech, the Prime Minister was right to say that ‘a country that cannot feed itself…has few options’. His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition agrees and will hold him to his promise by demanding urgent action. Canadians deserve immediate solutions that lower food inflation and make good, nutritious meals affordable once again.”
