Ministers Mélanie Joly and Tim Hodgson speak with reporters in Beijing – January 15, 2026

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson speak with journalists in Beijing, China, where they are accompanying Prime Minister Mark Carney on an official visit. They comment on the signing of a number of memoranda of understanding between Canada and China, including agreements related to energy, forestry, crime, and food safety. The ministers also face questions about negotiations with China concerning the possible reduction of Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for the easing of Chinese tariffs on canola and other Canadian food products.
