Mushkegowuk chiefs call for government assistance amid Kashechewan water crisis – January 14, 2026

At a news conference in Ottawa, representatives from the Mushkegowuk Council call for government assistance to aid evacuation efforts from the Kashechewan First Nation in northern Ontario. Kashechewan Chief Hosea Wesley declared a local state of emergency on January 4 in response to problems with the community’s water treatment and wastewater infrastructure.

Speaking with reporters are the Mushkegowuk Council’s Grand Chief Leo Friday and Deputy Grand Chief Amos Wesley.
