Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on the birthday of Sir John A. Macdonald:

“Today we celebrate the birth of a great man, without whom Canada as we know it would never have been. Sir John A. Macdonald was many things, but among them, he was a true believer in this country.

“His vision was a Canada that was strong and united – bound together by the Crown and common institutions, and by a ‘ribbon of steel’ that brought goods and people together from almost unfathomable distances.

“In these uncertain and dangerous times, we should be inspired by Macdonald’s goal of a proud and distinct Canada: protecting its citizens and holding its own across the vast continent. A nation in every sense of the word, not mere land.

“As we mark what would have been Sir John A’s 211th birthday, may we in our own small ways imitate his foresight and ambition. Together, following in his footsteps, we will leave our descendants a better Canada.”
