Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge is open to two-lane traffic for the first time since the 2021 atmospheric river, marking a major milestone in B.C.’s flood-recovery efforts.
The 2021 floods washed out numerous sections of Highway 8, cutting off access to communities, residences and local businesses along the corridor. This reopening reflects significant progress in B.C.’s Highway Reinstatement Program, with 23 of the 25 damaged Highway 8 sites permanently repaired.
Repair work along the corridor included reinstating and retrofitting three compromised bridges, constructing two new climate-resilient bridges and restoring 13 kilometres of laneway lost to flooding. The upgrades improve safety and reliability along the corridor and strengthen its ability to withstand weather-related events.
Environmental enhancements were added along the corridor to help offset the impacts of highway reconstruction. These measures included planting vegetation along stream banks and creating side channels to support fish habitats. These improvements will help accelerate ecosystem recovery following the damage caused by the atmospheric river.
Remaining work is scheduled for completion by September 2026, including additional environmental restoration, resurfacing of remaining sections of roadway, removal of two temporary bridges and rip-rap placement at sites 9 and 10 to protect the new structures.
Consultation, engagement and partnership with local Indigenous communities, residents, industry partners and other stakeholders were critical to the planning and delivery of this project.
Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures as crews complete final work activities. Travellers are encouraged to follow posted signage.
