Canadians Aren’t Buying the Liberals’ ZEV Mandate

Ottawa, ON – Raquel Dancho, Conservative Shadow Minister for Industry, released the following statement:

“Today, the Liberals decided to pour more taxpayer dollars on something Canadians aren’t buying. Carney’s handpicked Minister Evan Solomon announced a plan to pay over $200k per student – bankrolled with $2.5 million in taxpayer money – for the benefit of hand-selected private companies.

“The announcement provides no details about how providing a federal subsidy amounting to over $67,500 per student will produce a return for taxpayers. Instead, a handful of selected companies will reap the benefits, with Canadians effectively subsidizing private-sector salaries.

“Their doubling down on a failed bet on ZEVs comes as the latest sales numbers show only 8.9 per cent of new motor vehicle sales in October 2025 were ZEVs. That’s part of an almost 42 per cent decline in ZEV sales year-over-year as of October.

“Despite this lack of demand, the Liberals continue to waste tens of millions of taxpayers’ dollars on ZEV charging stations at billion-dollar businesses like IKEA.

“Instead of just scrapping his ZEV mandate and letting customers choose the car that works for them, Mark Carney launched a 60-day “review” on September 5. Nearly a hundred days later, there has still been no update on the Liberals’ promised review.

“It’s time to end corporate welfare and put Canadians back in the driver’s seat. Conservatives trust Canadians – not Ottawa’s Liberal elite – to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.”
