“We’re Deeply Concerned”, Says Union as Algoma Steel Announces Layoffs

Algoma Steel employees in Sault Ste. Marie learned yesterday that more than a thousand of them will be laid off beginning in March. In a letter, Algoma Steel’s CEO declared that the decision to reduce the workforce was taken in response to the tariffs on steel by the United States. Marty Warren, National Director for Canada with the United Steelworkers, believes the $ 500 million Algoma Steel got from a financing deal with Ottawa in November should have been tied to workforce guarantees.
