Alberta Refuses to Enforce Federal Gun Buyback

Alberta’s attorney general unveiled his response to Ottawa’s gun buyback program by introducing a motion invoking Alberta’s Sovereignty Act. The motion declares that firearms ownership is under Alberta’s jurisdiction and demands provincial entities “use all legal means necessary” to avoid enforcing the federal initiative. Pierre-Yves Bourduas, former deputy commissioner of the RCMP and President of P-Y Public Safety Management, explains that the federal initiative represents an additional burden to police services.
