Korean Heritage Month officially designated in B.C. as BC NDP MLA Choi’s bill becomes law
VICTORIA – New Democrat MLA Paul Choi’s unanimously supported private member’s bill was officially made law last night, a step toward a more inclusive B.C. that honours the contributions of Korean-Canadians.
“It’s incredibly meaningful to see this bill become law, I’m so proud to have brought it forward,” said Paul Choi, MLA for Burnaby South-Metrotown. “Seeing Korean Heritage Month officially recognized is a powerful affirmation of the place that the Korean-Canadian community holds in B.C.’s story. It gives communities, classrooms, and cultural groups a foundation to plan lessons, exhibits, and events every October. I’m looking forward to seeing all the ways Korean heritage will be celebrated across B.C. The timing is especially significant, as the bill became law during Korean Heritage Month.”
On November 18, MLA Choi will host a celebratory event at the Legislature. The event will feature a Korean flag raising ceremony, cultural performances including K-pop and traditional Korean music and dance, and a reception with traditional Korean dishes.
The Korean Heritage Month Act provides an opportunity to coordinate, support and promote events, initiatives and programs to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about the remarkable contributions of Korean-Canadians in the province of British Columbia.
