NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

BC NDP MLA Davidson says newly opened roundabout will improve safety and critical infrastructure in Prince Rupert

PRINCE RUPERT – BCNDP MLA Tamara Davidson says a new roundabout at the intersection of Highway 16, McBride Street, and 2nd Avenue is opening, enhancing safety, easing traffic congestion, and improving pedestrian access in Prince Rupert.

“This new roundabout means that drivers, pedestrians and cyclists can more easily access downtown Prince Rupert,” said Tamara Davidson, MLA for North Coast- Haida Gwaii. “A lot of work has gone into this project to not only make it a safer, more beneficial route for people, but to replace critical municipal infrastructure such as water pipes. It is great to see this all come to fruition”

The roundabout, which will open on November 1, 2025, was delivered through a $9.2 million contract awarded to IDL Projects Inc. Construction began in spring 2025 and all major construction activities are now complete. Minor utility connections are planned to occur in spring 2026.

In addition to the roundabout, the project includes a new multi-use pathway and upgrades to accessibility, signage, lighting, and transit infrastructure. These improvements feature bicycle ramps, LED streetlights, tactile walking surface indicator mats, and two new bus passenger shelters.

“This project is one of the first things people will see when they enter Prince Rupert—it’s transforming our community’s gateway,” said Herb Pond, Mayor of Prince Rupert. “The Province’s investment not only improves traffic safety, but also replaces failing pipes as part of our broader water system overhaul. It’s a clear sign of BC’s confidence in Prince Rupert’s future, which is something we share.”

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is also working closely with the City of Prince Rupert to deliver much-needed improvements to municipal infrastructure along the provincial right-of-way.
