SKIDEGATE– BC New Democrat MLA Tamara Davidson says provincial funding supporting a new composting facility in Tla’amin Nation will provide organic waste-processing, helping to reduce emissions.

“This project will help contribute to lower emissions, healthy soil and good, clean jobs for people in Skidegate and Daajing Giidds,” said Tamara Davidson, MLA for North Coast – Haida Gwaii. “It’s exciting that this project will be locally led, because rural and remote communities know the needs of their people best.”

The Skidegate Community Composting Project is receiving $850,000 to build a new in-vessel composting facility to produce Class A compost and provide curbside collection service.

The facility will serve approximately 2,318 residents in Skidegate First Nation and Daajing Giids and will provide 296 tonnes per year of organic waste processing capacity and support the local collection of up to 148 tonnes per year.

This project is expected to reduce 1,629 tCO2 eq of GHG emissions by 2030 and will create two full-time jobs and three part-time jobs for operation.

Projects also received funding in Tla’amin First Nation and Nisga’a Village of New Aiyansh. In total, the three Indigenous-led projects are receiving $2.6 million to support communities in building new organics processing infrastructure and curbside collection programs while supporting reconciliation.
