Ian McKay, ambassador of Canada to Japan and special envoy for the Indo-Pacific, speaks to reporters in Singapore to provide on update on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trip to Asia. This comes following the prime minister’s attendance at the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Carney is in Singapore to bolster Canadian trade and investment opportunities ahead of travelling to South Korea later in the week for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
McKay takes questions from reporters on negotiations for a free trade agreement with ASEAN nations, which is expected to be signed next year. The ambassador also comments on the new U.S.-Japan critical minerals deal and whether Canada is working towards securing a similar deal with the Trump administration
