Member of the Month – Kamloops Arts Council
For the member of the month – November, we interviewed KAC member artist Juhli Shauer.

How long have you been doing your art:
I’ve been dabbling most of my life but didn’t get serious about it until the end of 2019. For me Covid was awesome… I learned to paint.
What got you originally interested in the art you do:
I love octopus and wanted them on my walls so decided to paint them. Previously a painting could take me years to complete because it was never good enough so I gave myself a month to complete each. No matter what it looked like it was to be finished. It gave me a bit of structure and worked well.
What is something you have learned about yourself through your art:
I learned that it is ok to suck at something, just practice. I do have the discipline if I want to do something.
What do you most enjoy about art:
The colors and lately I’m really starting to enjoy my process!
What is your favorite joke/quote:
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house, empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably.

If you could teach everyone one art medium or method, what would it be, why:
Spray paint as an under painting, speeds everything up and so fun and liberating.
Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council:
I’m fairly new to Kamloops and a way to connect to the art community here.
What are you looking forward to the most in this upcoming year (A special show or project you’re working on):
I have a show here at the Courthouse in November and the Christmas Craft sale at Heritage House
