Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on the Anniversary of the Parliament Hill Attack

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on the Anniversary of the Parliament Hill Attack:

“In 2014, the heart of our nation’s democracy came under siege. On the doorstep of Parliament, Corporal Nathan Cirillo stood guard over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial. He watched over the monument to our country’s sons and daughters who paid the ultimate price in defence of our common home.

“Every morning, Cirillo put on a uniform that was more than clothing. It represented a commitment to uphold our nation’s freedom, worn over centuries by those whose memory he guarded. That uniform and the cause it represents – Canadians’ determination and will to remain free – so provoked the monster, whose sole mission was death and destruction, to murder him that day.

“Earlier that week, that same desire to attack our way of life motivated the terrorist attack that killed Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. These dark moments were meant to scare us, but Canadians would not be intimidated by acts of terror.

“Amidst the chaos and gunfire, six extraordinary residents of Ottawa rushed to Corporal Cirillo’s aid. They worked together to try to save his life, staying to comfort him even in his final moments. He had stood guard for Canada, never leaving his post, and those he swore to defend never left his side

“Today, we join with Canadians in mourning the loss of these two men. We also remember those who ran towards danger and selflessly risked their lives for others. Whether they provided care and comfort or protected the halls of Parliament, they remind us of the essential mission: to always defend freedom over fear.”
