Blaine Calkins Introduces Bill to Protect Canadians’ Freedom to Use Natural Health Products

Ottawa, ON – Blaine Calkins, Conservative Shadow Minister for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation, introduced Bill C-224, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (Natural Health Products).

Bill C-224 would ensure that Canadians can continue to access the protein powders, vitamins, probiotics and supplements that they depend on every day, while protecting the competitiveness of Canadian businesses.

“Conservatives are continuing the work we began with Bill C-368 in the last Parliament, countering the Liberals’ regulations to shut down health supplements and Canadians’ freedom to choose these products,” Calkins said. “Bill C-368 earned the support of Canadians from coast to coast to coast, including across party lines. As the government backtracks on their decade of failed policies, we hope they finally get behind our bill this time.”

Bill C-224 moves to reverse the changes the government made to the Food and Drugs Act in Bill C-47 with regards to natural health products. A majority of Canadians use natural health products, and many in the industry raised serious concerns with the changes that the government made in Bill C-47.

“Regulations that had existed prior to Bill C-47 had already kept Canadians safe. This added layer of bureaucracy is about giving more power to Ottawa, and not about protecting Canadians,” Calkins added.

“Conservative Bill C-224 will keep Canadians safe and reduce costly and pointless red tape, so that Canadians have choice and access to affordable natural health products,” Calkins concluded. “It’s time to build prosperity and healthy outcomes for Canadians, not bureaucracy.”
