Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on the Anniversary of Canada’s Entrance into the Second World War

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on the Anniversary of Canada’s Entrance into the Second World War:

“Today marks the eighty-sixth anniversary of Canada’s entry into the war that shaped our world. In the months and years that followed – at Dieppe, Ortona, Groningen and many places besides – Canadians would fight with boldness and courage in the face of our nation’s enemies.

“The date itself, September 10, is significant. Unlike the First World War, we did not follow Britain automatically into the conflict. Instead, almost eight years after Prime Minister R.B. Bennett secured Ottawa’s control over foreign affairs, Canada entered the fight through our own, independent declaration.

“Anyone who remembers that time can tell you how this struggle mobilized all elements of society. Nonetheless, the greatest burden was undoubtedly borne by our heroic sailors, soldiers and airmen. The incredible bravery of that generation of Canadians would soon win the respect of our allies and the begrudging admiration of our foes.

“Canada’s Conservatives extend our heartfelt thanks to our Second World War veterans. And we remember all those patriotic Canadians who gave their lives in that colossal fight against fascism.

“Lest we forget.”
