NDP Leader Don Davies issued the following statement on Cabinet’s decision to uphold the CRTC’s pro-competition fibre wholesale policy:

“The NDP welcomes the government’s recent decision to uphold the CRTC’s fibre wholesale decision.

Internet and cellular services are now an essential utility for Canadians. People rely on these in their everyday lives to work, play and stay connected. They need and deserve access to reliable, affordable choices across the country.

The CRTC policy increases internet competition and brings more choices to Canadians who need affordable options. Since the CRTC’s initial decision in 2023, internet prices have fallen 13.7% in Ontario and Quebec – clear evidence that the policy is working.

This decision contributes to building one Canadian economy and breaking down interprovincial trade barriers. It will allow western-based telecoms to compete on more even basis with their eastern counterparts.

Upholding the decision of an independent regulator is also critical to a proper regulatory system. This was a thoroughly-studied decision that thoughtfully balanced comments from over 300 parties filed, including the Competition Bureau, Indigenous Nations, and consumer protection groups.

Finally, this decision is positive for workers. TELUS has already announced that it will invest $2B more than expected in Ontario and Quebec, including building new fibre networks in these provinces. This will create new jobs in construction, network maintenance, and other parts of the economy.

We look forward to other companies following suit to the benefit of Canadians.”
