Canada Needs a Deal

Drumheller, AB – Canada’s loggers, millworkers and truckers are among the hardest workers in our country. Every day, they provide the resources that build our country. The United States’ unjustified tariffs under three Presidents and 10 years have killed jobs, lowered wages and hammered our lumber towns.

While it took Stephen Harper only 80 days as Prime Minister to get a deal removing and refunding the tariffs, the Liberals have failed to do the same over the last decade. Since Mark Carney became Prime Minister 144 days ago on the promise that he would negotiate a win with President Trump, the lumber tariffs have doubled. So have tariffs on steel, aluminum and other goods.

The U.S. is wrong to tariff Canada. And no one can control President Trump. Except Mark Carney promised he could. He said he would put “elbows up,” “handle Trump,” and “negotiate a win.” Since then, he has backed down, making concession after concession, as the U.S. continues to raise and expand tariffs on Canada. Loggers, mill towns, steel and aluminum workers are all waiting for Mark Carney to keep his promise.

Carney’s Liberals have failed to accomplish in 3,578 days what Conservatives got done in 80: get a deal ending tariffs. And it is only getting worse under Mark Carney, whose only accomplishment is back down while the U.S. doubled the tariffs under his watch.

“Contrary to what Carney promised in the election, since he became Prime Minister, it’s been elbows down and tariffs up,” said Poilievre, who has repeatedly offered to help Prime Minister Carney to get a deal, adding that “Conservatives will always work with all parties to put Canada First and end these tariffs.”
