Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on the Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising:

“81 years ago, Poles rose up to regain their freedom from German occupation. Despite being under-resourced, the Polish Home Army and many brave citizens of Warsaw fought to liberate the capital for 63 days in the largest resistance movement of the Second World War.

“Their initial success in resisting the German army was stunted as the Russian Red Army sat by, rejecting Allied attempts to supply Polish fighters, desiring to supplant Hitler’s tyranny with Stalin’s.

“This anniversary honours the bravery of the heroes who fought against all odds for their freedom.

“We also commemorate the 200,000 civilians killed during the fighting and the 650,000 remaining residents of Warsaw who were forcibly deported by the Nazis in the aftermath.

“Despite attempts by the Soviet Union to suppress these heroic stories, the Warsaw Uprising continues to serve as inspiration in the face of tyranny and a reminder of the price of freedom to secure a sovereign future.”
