Federal govt, Indigenous leaders launch conservation project in the N.W.T. – July 21, 2025

Julie Dabrusin, the federal environment minister, and Danny Yakeleya, chair of the Our Land for the Future Trust, sign an agreement to launch an Indigenous-led conservation initiative in the Northwest Territories. The federal government is investing $300 million in the project, which brings together 21 Indigenous governments and organizations to support long-term stewardship of the territory’s land and water.

Also speaking at the event in Yellowknife are Rebecca Alty (Crown-Indigenous relations minister and MP for the territory), Herb Norwegian (grand chief of the Decho First Nations), Juni Gahdele (sub-chief of the Lutsël K’é Dene First Nation), Marc Whitford (president of the North Slave Métis Alliance), Frederick Blake (grand chief of the Gwich’in Tribal Council), Danny Gaudet (chief of the Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government), and Jay Macdonald (N.W.T. environment minister).
