Sell The Assets To End Carney’s Conflicts
Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ethics disclosures:
“Late Friday afternoon, while Prime Minister Carney was on vacation, his long-hidden ethics disclosures were quietly released. Unfortunately for Canadians, it raises far more questions than answers.
“The disclosures reveal Carney must recuse himself from decisions involving around 100 companies through a conflict-of-interest screen. Yet many of those same companies are still included in his investment portfolio — held within a so-called ‘blind trust.’ His disclosures also show 574 separate stock holdings, either directly or through pooled funds — 91% of them headquartered in the United States.
“Mark Carney stated during the election campaign that he owned nothing but cash and personal real estate. He claimed he didn’t know what was in his blind trust. His own disclosures, released conveniently after the election, prove this was a complete falsehood.
“It appears Carney’s friends aren’t worried about screens. On April 30th, NorthRiver Midstream lobbied him. On May 6th, he met with Sam Pollack, CEO of Brookfield Infrastructure. Both of these companies are listed as being covered by his ethics screen.
“Conveniently, Carney’s election pledges also line up with major Brookfield investments. At the leaders’ debate, he praised Westinghouse, a nuclear firm he helped acquire while at Brookfield. His housing plan promotes pre-fab homes, directly benefiting Modulaire. His AI policy props up Compass Data Centers and Data4. All Brookfield, all profit lining his pockets.
“Canada’s Prime Minister cannot be trusted to make decisions on housing, energy, or AI when his decisions, or those of his Ministers and civil servants, could boost his own future payouts from Brookfield. Even if he’s not making decisions directly about those companies, broader policy initiatives that advance these sectors will directly benefit his future earnings.
“Mark Carney must explain why he kept these conflicts secret from voters until after the election. Now he will either be in a position to profit from big decisions — or be forced to sit out those decisions altogether. Either way, Canadians will pay the price.
“Carney’s conflict screen gives us vague outlines — but no transparency on the millions of dollars he stands to receive from Brookfield while he governs this country. Canadians deserve a Prime Minister who is free to act in the public interest — not someone blinded by personal gain or excluded from decision-making because of it.
This is why today, Conservatives call on Prime Minister Carney to sell his holdings so a trustee can invest the cash in a truly blind trust.”
