NDP Critic for Foreign Affairs Heather McPherson issued this statement in response to Canada’s sanctions on Ben Gvir and Smotrich:

“As Canada finally announced sanctions on two far-right Israeli leaders responsible for hate and war crimes against Palestinians in the West Bank, New Democrats are calling for more action from the Carney government.

These sanctions are focused on the horrific crimes in the West Bank. But Canada is still refusing to impose sanctions on Israeli leaders for the genocide in Gaza. Canada should respect international law and sanction Netanyahu and his cabinet immediately for their role in the genocide of Gaza. All Israeli officials who incite, or are responsible for, genocide should be sanctioned.

New Democrats called on Canada to sanction extremists like Ben Gvir and Smotrich 19 months ago. The NDP motion brought to Parliament in March 2024 also included a call for sanctions against Israeli leaders who incite genocide.

New Democrats are also calling on the Liberal government to impose an arms embargo, suspend the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, and recognize the State of Palestine.”
