Member of the Month – Kamloops Arts Council
For the member of the month – June, we interviewed KAC’s literary artist Sean Campbell.
Full Name: Sean Campbell
Medium: Literary art
How long have you been doing your art:
I was chosen for the Young Authors Conference here in Kamloops when I was 10-ish. It was the first time I felt the power of creating something and sharing it with the world. Being an author felt really cool and that feeling never really went away. I love it.
What got you originally interested in the art you do:
I’ve always had a lot of ideas and it always seemed like a waste not to try to make them come to life in some form.
What is something you have learned about yourself through your art:
I’ve learned that I’m not as afraid of failure or people criticising my work as I am about not trying anything at all. It’s been a powerful realization.
What is your favourite joke/quote:
Since I write children’s books, I often get to read to kids. They are amazing and have the best questions. Sometimes those questions are related to the book and sometimes they are completely unrelated to anything we’ve been talking about. Either way…amazing.
What do you think makes art important:
Art is an incredible way to better understand people and ourselves. Especially the written arts (I’m biased) from poetry to literary fiction to non-fiction.
Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council:
Community is everything. It has such a positive impact on my art, work, family…you name it. I’m proud to be a member of the KAC and the Kamloops community.
What are you looking forward to the most in this upcoming year (A special show or project you’re working on):
I’m working on a new book called “Tooth Fairy Feud” I’m very excited about. It’s a true story about my wife when she lost her first tooth and put it under her pillow without telling anyone. Lots of laughs in this one for kids and parents alike.
