VICTORIA – NDP MLAs Darlene Rotchford and Nina Krieger say innovative projects in Greater Victoria will help recycle plastic, prevent waste, and create good, clean jobs.

“In such a beautiful region surrounded by water, we know first-hand how plastic pollution impacts ecosystems,” said Darlene Rotchford, MLA for Esquimalt-Colwood. “By reducing and diverting waste, these projects are helping make the region cleaner and healthier for everyone.”

The following projects in Greater Victoria are receiving funding:

  • Destination Greater Victoria – $111,421 for a circular and sustainable drink water program to prevent single-use plastic
  • Good World Materials – $113,806 for use of ocean plastic for furniture
  • Nezza Naturals – $35,000 to expand their refill store
  • Supply Creative Reuse Society – $94,291 for repair and extending the life of hard to recycle items

“Organizations in Victoria have been doing great work to make our community more sustainable and reduce waste,” said Nina Krieger, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake. “This funding will help build on that work and get us closer to a healthier future.”

The CleanBC Plastics Action Fund supports projects that prevent and reduce plastic waste in B.C. First launched in 2020, the fund has invested over $35 million into projects that find creative solutions to help reduce plastic waste in our communities. This year, the provincial government is providing more than $8 million through the CleanBC Plastics Action Fund to local businesses, foundations, and First Nations. The funding will support 34 new projects, with 63 projects having received funding in previous years. The first two phases of the Plastics Action Fund have already created over 240 direct long-term, full-time jobs, with more on the way in Phase 3.
