NORTH VANCOUVER – BC New Democrat MLAs Susie Chant and Bowinn Ma says applications are now open for funding that will support Indigenous communities’ work towards greater food security and food sovereignty.

Projects that received this funding last year are currently underway in North Vancouver.

“The Native Fishing Association plays a vital role in supporting Indigenous communities by protecting fishing rights, promoting economic development, and preserving traditional knowledge.” said Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver – Lonsdale. “Their work is critical not just for Indigenous self-determination, but for the health and sustainability of our coastal ecosystems, and I’m grateful for their commitment to protecting this critical and sacred food source, and for the leading the way in sustainable fishing practices.

Indigenous organizations and communities can apply for funding from now until May 20, 2025, by visiting: https://newrelationshiptrust.ca/indigenous-food-security-and-sovereignty.

The following local projects received funding in the previous round of applications:

  • Native Fishing Association is receiving $150,000 for a seafood conference
  • Squamish Nation is receiving $250,000 for a food pantry/kitchen upgrade

The Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Program, launched in 2023, is supporting on- and off-reserve Indigenous-led projects. These projects are doing work to revitalize Indigenous food harvesting, agro-ecosystems, expand capacity, boost local processing and distribution, and increase food supply and security. This work is being done across B.C., with a focus on rural and remote communities.

“Indigenous communities know best what is needed to strengthen their own local food systems, as well as make them resilient and sustainable for generations to come,” says Susie Chant, MLA for North Vancouver Seymour. “Squamish Nation has been doing incredible work to improve access to traditional and healthy food for their community, and I’m proud to see these projects receiving the recognition and support they deserve.”

Since 2023, over 100 projects have been given funding and are underway. This is part of the BC NDP government’s commitments to reconciliation, increased Indigenous participation in agriculture and food systems, and supporting Indigenous-led food sovereignty.
