Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Vyshyvanka Day:

“Since time immemorial, artistic and symbolic embroidery has been important to the Ukrainian people. Originally, embroidery was considered to be a talisman, bringing good luck to the wearer. Each distinct region of Ukraine developed their own identifiable style and patterns, from the Carpathian highlands to the rolling plains of the Donbas.

“Handed down from generation to generation, this kaleidoscope of patterns and motifs reflects Ukraine’s incredible cultural diversity – as well as the depth of their folk traditions.

“The Vyshyvanka took on a new meaning after the Revolution of Dignity, coming to symbolize the patriotism, freedom and independence of the people of Ukraine. Over 3 years ago, Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine was not only a violent attack against the people of Ukraine, but also a brutal attack on Ukrainian culture – often denying its very existence.

“Today, many Canadians will put their pride on full display. For over 130 years, Canada has been home to a flourishing community of people with Ukrainian heritage. Here, in the true north strong and free, Ukrainian culture has been expressed in peace and liberty – even when it is threatened overseas.

“Many Canadians will demonstrate our solidarity with Ukraine by donning our Vyshyvankas. Common Sense Conservatives believe that Vyshyvanka Day is more important today than ever before. Together with all my colleagues, I want to send my warmest wishes to everyone celebrating their incredible, vibrant and resilient heritage! Slava Ukraini.”
