With the appointment of Don Davies as Interim Leader of Canada’s NDP, the party begins reconnecting with working people, renewing its commitment to Canadians, and rebuilding for the future.

“This party was built by and for working people to fight for fairness, dignity, and opportunity,” said Davies. “That’s the foundation we will rebuild together.”

Alongside a thorough review of recent results, Davies pledged an open, grassroots process – meeting, listening, engaging – to shape the party’s next chapter with workers and communities at its heart.

“We need to take a hard look at how we got to where we are, and we need a clear view of where we’re going,” said Davies. “We need to reconnect with working people and show them that the NDP is their party, the one that fights and delivers for them.”

The NDP caucus has already begun meeting to coordinate its efforts in Parliament and will strategically use the balance of power it holds to push the government to deliver real results for people.

“We heard loud and clear from voters in every province and territory that life is too expensive and they want a strong economy in an independent Canada,” said Davies. “I’m honoured to lead our party during this crucial time to bring their voices to Parliament.”

Davies highlighted several key priorities that will guide his leadership in the months ahead:

  • Tackling the housing crisis with truly affordable homes;
  • Expanding and strengthening public health care, including mental health services; and
  • Fighting for good jobs and better wages in every part of the country.

“The strength of the NDP has always come from our members, activists, labour and supporters. I look forward to working with our caucus, our party, progressive allies and everyone ready to build a stronger, better, fairer Canada for everyone,” Davies concluded.
