Poilievre and Carney’s plans both mean tax breaks for millionaires and cuts for everyone else « Canada’s NDP

Like the Liberals, Pierre Poilievre released a platform today that would mean billions in cuts to services. Unlike the Liberals, Poilievre’s platform is specific about what Canadians will lose.

Poilievre’s platform details big cuts to environmental protections, to the public service, and much more. Their plan to reduce the deficit also relies on a large-scale sell off of public land which under the NDP plan would be used to build housing that Canadians can afford.

The Liberal platform also promises cuts – but crowds all $28 billion into one vague line item, leaving Mark Carney’s plan for cuts a mystery. At an event yesterday, Carney envisioned possibly cutting even more. Carney has consistently talked about health and education transfers as part of the operating budget that he wants to cut.

While making service cuts, both parties are proposing the same expensive capital gains tax break for millionaires. The Parliamentary Budget Office costed the tax break for the Liberal platform at $17 billion total (PBO, April 19). The government costed the cut at $19 billion.

Jagmeet Singh said yesterday that he’ll fight to stop Carney’s $28 billion in cuts:

“More and more Canadians are rejecting the cuts of Pierre Poilievre and that’s a good thing to see. But we’re also seeing people look at Mark Carney and say ‘wait a second, Mark Carney is also talking a lot about cuts.’ In fact, his platform laid out $28 billion in cuts. Vote for a New Democrat and we’re going to fight for you. You have the power to vote for a New Democrat, to send them to Ottawa and they’re going to fight to defend the things you care about.”
