NDP slate is 51% women as both Liberals and Conservatives lose ground on gender balance since 2019 and 2021 « Canada’s NDP

OTTAWA – Canada’s NDP has nominated a diverse slate of candidates for the upcoming federal election, with more than half being women.

“Our team will fight for the everyday Canadians, so it’s only right that our candidates reflect the diversity of our incredible country,” said NDP Campaign Director Jennifer Howard. “With Trump’s tariffs, Canadians deserve representatives who’ve got their backs. So, we’re thrilled that so many people from different backgrounds want to bring that fight to Ottawa with Jagmeet and the NDP.”

The Liberal slate is just 36% women– down from 43% in 2021 and 39% in 2019. The Conservative slate is approximately 23% women – down from 33% in 2021 and 32% in 2019.

This matters because diversity isn’t just something we celebrate—it’s a core part of what makes Canada, Canada. At a time when people are feeling the pressure of rising costs and uncertainty, we need leaders who understand that protecting public health care, good jobs, and our shared values means including the voices of those most impacted.

“We need to be recruiting more women into politics, but both the Liberals and Conservatives are moving in the wrong direction,” said Howard. “It’s been a decade since Justin Trudeau embraced gender balance in the Liberal party, and it’s incredibly disappointing to see the Liberals going in the wrong direction under Mark Carney.”

The NDP’s candidates include:

  • Women: 176 (51.3%)
  • Racialized: 112 (32.6%)
  • 2SLGBTQIA+: 71 (20.6%)
  • Youth: 47 (13.7%)
  • People living with a disability: 43 (12.5%)
  • Indigenous people: 20 (5.8%)

A diverse NDP team reflects the strength of our country and is ready to fight for a Canada that protects what makes us who we are.
