Liberal candidate and allies are “working with Carney” to cancel the foreign buyers ban « Canada’s NDP

Vancouver real estate marketer Bob Rennie says he is working with Mark Carney on a plan that would cancel the foreign buyers’ ban.

Rennie recently told a real estate panel that he is “working with Carney,” on a plan to allow foreign investors to buy pre-sale condo rentals: “let’s allow foreign buyers to buy it… show the world we are open for business.”

Vancouver Liberal candidate Mark Wiens is also calling for an end to the foreign buyers’ ban. Wiens is a realtor who has explicitly marketed BC homes to non-resident investors in China. Wiens has acknowledged that this drives up housing prices:

Mark Wiens: “By taking properties to China, are we getting our clients a higher price, therefore raising the price overall? I’d say yes.”

Global News: “So you are part of the problem as far as unaffordability goes?”

Mark Wiens: “Again, you’d have to define what an unaffordable problem is and so I don’t think that I’m creating a problem at all. I think I’m creating solutions.” (Global News)

Like Rennie, Wiens has recently advocated for eliminating or weakening the foreign buyer ban:“Why not change the ban so that foreigners can purchase presale properties only?”

Wiens’ marketing to buyers in China has received widespread community condemnation and has been covered by Global News, CTV, CityNews, and Daily Hive.
