Climate Action That Protects You from Trump’s Trade War and Rising Costs « Canada’s NDP
ESQUIMALT — With Trump’s trade threats fuelling fear and economic uncertainty, Canadians are already bracing against a rising cost of living and a worsening climate crisis. Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced a plan to lower energy bills, create good jobs, and stop giving oil and gas CEOs a free ride.
“In the face of Trump’s trade war and a worsening climate crisis, we have a choice,” said Jagmeet Singh. “We can let CEOs and Big Oil profit while families pay the price—or we can take bold climate action that protects your job, lowers your bills, and builds a better future for everyone.”
Retrofits That Save Money and Create Jobs
New Democrats will eliminate public subsidies and tax breaks for oil and gas companies—saving $18 billion over 10 years—and put that money to work for Canadians through a major home retrofit program:
- Retrofit 3.3 million homes with energy-saving upgrades—including free retrofits for 2.3 million low-income households, and grants or low-interest loans for 1 million more—cutting energy bills by up to $4,500 a year for families across Canada.
- Support for Canadian-made solutionslike heat pumps and construction materials—boosting local manufacturing.
- Thousands of good union jobs in installation, auditing, and retrofitting—created through partnerships with colleges and union training centres.
“This is how we fight the climate crisis and protect Canadians from the effect of Trump’s trade war at the same time,” Singh said. “Lower bills. Good jobs. Cleaner air and water. That’s what Canadians deserve—and that’s what we’ll deliver.”
Polluters Pay. You Save.
As families struggle with cost, the effects of Trump’s trade war, and worsening climate impacts, oil and gas companies are still raking in record profits—and getting billions in public handouts from Liberal and Conservative governments.
New Democrats will:
- End the Consumer Carbon Tax—for good.
- Keep the industrial carbon price.
- Keep the emissions cap in place—and protect workers as we transition.
- Eliminate oil and gas subsidies—redirecting $18 billion from corporate handouts to real help for families.
- Introduce a Border Carbon Adjustment—so overseas polluters don’t undercut Canadian workers, and clean industries like Canadian steel and cement stay competitive.
“In every crisis, the ultra-rich protect their profits and leave working people to deal with the consequences—Trump’s trade war is no different,” said Singh. “While Poilievre would let polluters off the hook and Carney keeps the handouts flowing, we’re choosing a different path—one that protects you, your job, and your family from the fallout.”
This is not just about climate policy. It’s about the kind of country we want to live in:
“A country where no one is priced out of heat, out of safety, or out of their home,” said Singh. “Where public dollars help people—not pad the profits of oil CEOs.”
