NORTH VANCOUVER – NDP MLA Susie Chant and Bowinn Ma says more people in North Vancouver will be able to safely and conveniently choose active transportation to get around, thanks to provincial funding.

“It is great to see more pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure coming to the North Shore,” says Susie Chant, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour. “These projects will improve the commuter experience and encourage more people to bike or walk, whether it be to school, work or other places in their communities.”

The District of North Vancouver been awarded $310,755.50 toward the Spirit Trail Eastern Extension: Seymour to Windridge/Berkley through the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program. This funding will be used for new on-street cycling facilities, off-street multi-use pathways, as well as pedestrian improvements and crossing improvements that will connect to the North Shore Spirit Trail linking Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove.

“The Spirit Trail is one of the most underrated gems of the North Shore, providing pedestrians, cyclists, people with wheeled mobility aids, and any other micro-mobility with safe access across the North Shore,” says Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver – Lonsdale.  “I’m glad our government is able to support the District of North Vancouver in their work to continue progress towards the collective vision of a 35km trail connecting Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove.”

Across B.C., 62 projects and network plans are moving forward thanks to $24 million in cost-shared provincial funding.

The Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program funds Indigenous, local, and regional governments with cost-sharing investments of up to $500,000 for infrastructure projects and as much as $50,000 in funding to develop active transportation network plans.

These grants support projects that help improve connections to employment, education, transit, and recreational centres around the province, helping people use active transportation options safely and efficiently in their communities.
