NDP MLA Diana Gibson say active transportation projects in Saanich will keep people moving towards sustainability

SAANICH NDP MLA Diana Gibson says more people in the Shelbourne Corridor area will be able to safely and conveniently choose active transportation to get around, thanks to provincial funding.

“I’m looking forward to these new improvements for active commuters along and around the Shelbourne Corridor,” says Diana Gibson, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “Active transportation makes it easier for our community to stay connected and stay active.”

Saanich is receiving $500,000 for 2.3km of AAA bike lanes, 0.36km of new multi-use pathways, and pedestrian improvements on Pear Street. Saanich is also receiving an additional $500,000, totalling $1 million for the community, for 750m of new sidewalks, improved pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, and widened boulevards adjacent to Tillicum Elementary School, located in the Victoria-Swan Lake constituency.

Across B.C., 62 projects and network plans are moving forward thanks to $24 million in cost-shared provincial funding.

The Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program funds Indigenous, local, and regional governments with cost-sharing investments of up to $500,000 for infrastructure projects and as much as $50,000 in funding to develop active transportation network plans.

These grants support projects that help improve connections to employment, education, transit, and recreational centres around the province, helping people use active transportation options safely and efficiently in their communities.
