SURREY – NDP Surrey MLAs say that more families will benefit from $10-a-day child care spaces.

“More $10-a-day spaces in Surrey is great news for everyone,” says Garry Begg, MLA for Surrey – Guildford. “By making childcare more accessible, we’re not only supporting families but also investing in the future of our region, and I’m proud to be part of this important initiative.”

The following child care centres will convert spaces to the $10 a Day ChildCare BC program:

  • Al-Mustafa Islamic Association
    Al-Mustafa Junior Kindergarten, 20 spaces
  • B.C. Family Hearing Resource Society
Communication Stars Specialized Childcare, 12 spaces
  • City of Surrey
Fraser Heights Recreation Centre, 72 spaces

“Surrey families deserve access to quality childcare, regardless of their income,” says Jessie Sunner, MLA for Surrey – Newton. “By making childcare more affordable, we’re supporting parents as they balance work and family, and ensuring our children receive the care they need. This investment will have lasting benefits for our community.”

Across BC, families will soon be benefiting from 770 new $10-a-day spaces at 22 child care centres. Spaces in the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program reduce the average cost of child care for children ages 5 and under from $1,115 a month for full-time, centre-based care to $200 a month for the same service, saving families an average of approximately $915 a month per child.

“It’s fantastic to see more $10-a-day childcare spaces being introduced across Surrey,” says Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey – Fleetwood. “These new spaces will save families thousands of dollars each year and help ease the financial burden many parents face. This program is crucial for strengthening our community, providing affordable care, and setting our children up for success.”

Since 2018, the Province and Government of Canada have invested nearly $8 billion through ChildCareBC to build a future where access to affordable, inclusive, and quality child care is a core service that families can rely on. This has resulted in more than 40,000 new child care spaces funded and more than 16,000 $10-a-day child care spaces throughout B.C.

“These new spaces will make a real difference for Surrey families. It’s not just about saving money—it’s about giving children a strong start in life and enabling parents to pursue opportunities that strengthen our local economy,” says Amna Shah, MLA for Surrey City Centre. “We’re creating a better future for families across our city, and I couldn’t be more excited.”
