NDP critic for diversity and inclusion MP Blake Desjarlais (Edmonton Griesbach) made the following statement:

“Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, New Democrats re-commit ourselves to building a world where everyone’s rights, dignity, and worth are respected. Canada has come a long way – but we must protect the progress we’ve made and pledge to do more.

Indigenous, Black, and racialized Canadians continue to face discrimination in all aspects of their lives. A recent report revealed that over 77 per cent of Black Canadians still experience discrimination at work. This is unacceptable, and when human rights around the world are under threat, it’s incumbent on all leaders to choose policies where all Canadians can be safe and succeed.

New Democrats are also reminded of Canada’s history of colonialism, and its impact on Indigenous peoples. Too many Indigenous peoples have died at the hands of police and face unfair discrimination. Governments at all levels need to do more to invest in and uplift communities impacted to ensure they have what they need to thrive.

New Democrats pledge to keep advocating for an end to discrimination and racism. As many countries around the world and some political parties in Canada are abandoning equity and anti-racism initiatives, New Democrats will continue to push for a Canada where everyone is free from discrimination.”
